AMVs

I wasn't doing anything the whole weekend. Literally. The next week, I have four exams, or to be precise, three tests from four classes. Instead of studying, I was sitting plastered to youtube and animemusicvideos and watching and downloading and arguing with my friend via icq what is worth seeing and what's not. We have absolutelly different taste so it was a bit... frustrating. But I have a couple of recs for you.

At first, I have found Marisa Panaccio's website. Some time ago, I was amazed by her Princess Tutu amv Hold Me Now. I downloaded some other videos too, the best I liked are Running up that hill (Last Exile), Firefly (another Last Exile video) and Ding Ding Dong (very funny Yami No Matsuei shounen-ai video). Or if you like vampires, try Vampires ^^ All these amvs can be downloaded on the page I linked, just follow the instructions (the files are packed and password-protected).

Sayan Visual Studio made a slightly psychotic Death Note amv Spoil. It's maybe the most technically interesting amv I've ever seen. Really really good video, but you have to like dark themes.
One of the SVS members, Darius GQ, made a good Yami No Matsuei amv. You can find it here.

I don't know if this is amv or an official trailer or something else, but it's definitely great. Great song, great editing, great art, great main character with super sexy Takahiro Sakurai's voice, what could you want more? Have I already said that Kusuri uri is one of the most sexy anime characters ever? In both his forms. Kyaaa!

And I love parodies. This is an Evangelion one and this a Bleach one. I haven't seen a single episode from Bleach, but it doesn't matter. And Byakuya looks like Severus Snape XD

Oh, I almost forgot to mention Gunslinger Girl amv Expendable Inocence. I just love this anime.

It's been a long time since I translated anything. And it's been even longer time since I translated something from Harry Potter fandom. In fact, it was a year last week. Wow. I wouldn't have guessed my crisis would last so long. Maybe it's symbolic, this week everything worked out. Even if not the best way it could, but it's finally done and there is no need to worry about ifs and might-have-beens.

To celebrate this memorable event, I decided to start translating again. I don't know if I am capable enough and I don't know if I wouldn't jack it in (I hope not! I've already asked for permission to translate The Story so it would be a shame if I didn't finish it off. Please pretend you don't know I started translating Five Loves and never completed it, ok?). I won't tell you which story I picked because you would read it in English and I'd have less readers later ^^ Let's call it "The Story". I think I will post information about progress of my translation here - maybe if you scolded me that I was slow and lazy bitch, I'd finish it sooner ^^

Anyway, besides watching caramell dansen videos on youtube (omg it has even Mononoke version!), I began reading Harry Potter fanfiction again. It's best way how to find something good to translate, you know ^^ So I bring you some recs. I can tell you The Story is sort of Harry/Draco (it's a shame that Drarry is one of my OTPs and I've never translated a fanfic with this pairing) so the recs' pairings are pretty much obvious.

At first, I'd like to recommend two fics written by Maya. Dark Side of Light is a very dark and disturbing story set in post-war world. But forget about Rowling's picnics in the woods and friendly bickering in Forbidden Forest. This story is completely different. If you're susceptible to depression, don't read it. It's all written as dialogue-only and thanks to this it's even more chilling than it would be if it were described in complex sentences. The story takes place in Azkaban where Draco is imprisoned and Harry comes to see him.
The other Maya's story is Coda to an Epilogue: Twenty Years Later, Or The Kids Are All Right. As the title says, it's DH-compliant and definitely not a dark story. In fact, you'll be laughing hard when reading some parts, I promise. Harry goes to Durmstrang to save his kids who are lost in school sewers. If you don't love Scorpius and Al after reading this, you will never love them.

Well, umm, I know I've already recced Four Moments of Mourning, but I can't help myself. It's so good you just have to read it.

In the end, something that is not Drarry. It wouldn't be me if I didn't rec a Snupin fic, would it? Busaikko's Here, where the world is quiet is, sadly, another sad story in today's batch. But it's not chilling like Dark Side is, it's just full of sadness at the end. And in the middle. Well, it's all sad but in a good way. I don't want to spoil you anything so I'll just say it's another post-war story.

I was wondering about posting a list of my recommendations of fanfictions I'd read and found them memorable for some reason. The list is not finished and will never be, I plan to update it once in a while. Stories are sorted by fandom, see below. Feel free to discuss any story that catches your eye, I'd like to know I am not the only one who likes them ^^

UPDATE 2008-01-31 Death Note section moved to separate post.
UPDATE 2008-02-01 Gakuen Heaven, the same thing.
UPDATE 2008-02-11 Kyou Kara Maou, new post.
UPDATE 2008-02-11 Ouran, new post. Only "other stuff" section remains. I'll move it in few days, I suppose.

Death Note

Few days ago, I finished wathing Death Note. It was the biggest disappointment in my anime life 'cause I was ready to announce that it was one of the best anime I've ever seen – until the 25th episode. In this moment they should have stop, no more episodes needed. But they didn't and episodes 26-37 are crap. Mello or Near are not to blame, just the authors who took the characters and warped their personalities (Matsuda is naïve but not mentally disturbed to behave like this, for god's sake). Before the 25, there was tension and confusion and twisted logic that made sense in the end; after the 25 there was only twisted logic and feeling "Are they kidding? It couldn’t be like that. I don't believe in what they are all doing."

But that's not what I wanted to talk about. I wanted to say that Death Note reminded me why I've started reading slash/shounen-ai/yaoi in the first place. As [livejournal.com profile] justthefic stated in her essay Virgulectics - The Slash Is Where It's At, slash means tension. I totally agree and Death Note is exemplary (although it is not shounen-ai nor yaoi). The tension between L and Light is almost visible and their dialogs, their mind games send shivers down my spine. I couldn't take my eyes of them 'cause any glance, any pause, any comment could have a special meaning that could kill one of them. And then I found A Tithe to Hell, a story by [livejournal.com profile] ningenfucker. While reading, I could only stare, bite my finger as Ryuuzaki often does, and then couldn’t sleep and while sleeping dreaming of them, still seeing that scene with knife, hearing "Kami" and "Kira" at the same time and sorry Nifredil, Loveless will have to waint until January 'cause I've hanged myself with rope made of Shinigami's diary.

Excerpt from fanfic under cut. )

I should warn you, the story is NC-17 with warnings for: knife/bloodplay, excessive eyerolling, bad metaphoric comparisons of L to fish, amphibians, birds, monkeys, insects, cave dwellers, and fungi, ridiculous amounts of cuddling, and cake as a plot device (these are the author's words *smirk*).
